Volusia County
                   Tax Identification Number System
(Also known as "Parcel Identification Number or Folio Number)

Volusia County, like many other assessment jurisdictions, uses a "Parcel
Identification Number" to store parcel information. Each Parcel Number is
unique to a specific property and also functions as a "short legal" in
that the number helps us locate the parcel on the plat maps. Below is a
sample Parcel Number and an explanation of it's meaning. The terms used
in the breakdown are also defined at the bottom of this document. Feel
free to contact our Mapping Department at (386)-736-5903 if you need
 additional information.

                   About Townships and Ranges
Most property in Florida is described in blocks containing 36 square
mile sections. These blocks are called "townships". Volusia County
contains more than 47 whole or partial townships.

Each township is described by a north or south "township number" and an
east or west "range number". These numbers originate at a specific point near
downtown Tallahassee in north Florida. Because of Volusia's proximity to
the state origination marker, all of our "township numbers" are south (as
in "township 16 south") and all of our "range numbers" are east (as in
 "range 31 east").

The first two digits in our parcel number above will tell you the township
and range. Because all of Volusia's ranges (north and south identifiers)
are unique, we are able to drop the first number in the township and range
from our parcel number and still know the township's location.

In our example parcel above, the first two numbers are "52”. This tells
us that the parcel is located in township 15-32 or more correctly it is
located in township 15 south, range 32 east. Below is a graphic layout of
 Volusia's townships.
  • Townships numbers "2 " through "9" represent townships "12" through "19"
  • Township numbers "0" through "1" represents townships "20 and "21"
  • Range numbers "7" through "9" represent ranges "27" through "29"
  • Range numbers "0" through "6" represent ranges "30" through "36"

Other Definitions

 Government Lots
A " government lot" is an irregular shaped parcel that does not meet the
normal "square parameters" of regular townships. These irregular parcels
are caused by government grants, adjustments for the curvature of the earth,
or any other circumstance that may not be typical of usual mapping
procedures. An example of a government lot number would be: 5809-00-01-0031
 Township
The term used by mappers to describe a 36 square mile section of property.
It is identified by "township and range" numerical and directional
descriptions (example: "Township 15 south, Range 32 east"). It is also
identified by the first digit of the Parcel Number.

 Range
The "Range " applies to the east & west description of the township (example:
"Township 15 south, Range 32 east"). It is identified by the second
 digit of the Parcel Number.

 Section Number
The "Section Number" is a two-digit number that represents a "one square
mile" block of property within a township. Each township is comprised of
36 sections. It is identified by the third and fourth digit of the
 Parcel Number.

 Subdivision
The subdivision portion of the parcel number can represent the type of
property or the number of the subdivision within the section. It is the
5th and 6th digits in the parcel number. The number "00" would denote
acreage, while the number "03" would indicate subdivision three in that
particular section. (Note: The combination of a "00" in this place with
a number greater that "00" in the block number would indicate a
"government lot"(see definition for "government lot").

 Block
The block number identifies a particular block in that subdivision. It is
the 7th and 8th digits in the parcel number. A lot number of "00" would
denote acreage, or no specific block number in that subdivision.

 Lot Number
These last four numbers in the parcel number are the individual parcels
identifiers. These are the numbers that are unique to each and every parcel.
There may be many parcels with the first 8 digits the same, but only one
parcel will have these last 4 digits exactly the same.
